How to Make the Most of Rock Climbing in Krabi

How to Make the Most of Rock Climbing in Krabi
When you only have a short period of time in one spot there are certain things you can skip out on and feel like you haven’t missed much…rock climbing in Krabi is not one of them.  It has been rated one of the top places in the world to go rock climbing and once you go you’ll see why.  There are routes for beginners, intermediate, and advanced climbers along with half day and full day trips.  Since I only live about an hour from Krabi I was able to climb on multiple occasions.  I chose to go through two different companies doing a half day with one and a full day with the other.  Here’s what I learned and my own personal preference:

Krabi Rock Climbing—Half Day:

Being that I had never rock climbed before and am probably one of the clumsiest people you’ll ever meet, I chose the beginner level half day for my first time climbing.

Service: I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again: a tour guide can really make or break your experience.  In this case, our guide, and everyone else at the company, completely made the experience.  While I do look back and remember how much I enjoyed the climbing, I mostly remember how welcoming and entertaining my guide was.  From the time they picked us up to the time they drove back to our hotel to drop off some t-shirts that we forgot to buy on the island, I was thoroughly impressed and satisfied with their service.

Course: The half day course started at about 8 am when they picked us up from our hotel and ended around 2 pm when we finished climbing.  I climbed about five different courses and was dead by the end of the day.

Real Rocks Climbing School—Full Day:

Since I had one day of climbing under my belt I clearly thought I was a trained professional and decided to take on the full day of climbing for my next adventure.

Service:  I was picked up at 8 am and taken to their main shop on Ao Nang while we waited for the rest of the people that were climbing that day to arrive.  We waited there for about an hour, but they did give me free coffee so I’m not complaining.  Everyone I encountered was nice enough and my specific tour guide was friendly…though he didn’t really seem to want to chat lol.  Overall, they were friendly enough, but nothing to rave about.

Course: The full day course consists of a few hours of climbing in the morning, a short hike through a cave to a beautiful viewpoint, repelling down from said cave, lunch, and another hour of climbing after lunch.  There was one guy in my group who had been climbing for 20 years, his girlfriend, who had never been climbing before, and me (who had been climbing once so is obviously very skilled).  My point being that, you don’t need to be a great climber to choose the full day option.  The view from the cave and repelling from it was definitely a highlight of my day.

My Choice: Full Day Course with Krabi Rock Climbing

While I didn’t do the full day with this company, the itinerary was almost identical so I have no doubt that they would only exceed my expectations.  Although the full day of climbing is definitely a long day, the few additions are definitely worth it.

I really hope you have the chance to go rock climbing in Krabi because it is truly an experience you will never forget.  I am obviously very experienced in this area, so if you have any further questions feel free to ask!  Jk lol, still a beginner, but I’ll give it my best shot.

P.S: Not cool enough to have companies sponsor my trips, so all trips mentioned above were funded by me…aka opinions are my own!

  • Finally a post that didn’t make cry! LOL Although I should be crying about how terrible I look in the photos! Haha! I must say that the Rock Climbling was certainly a highlight for me, but the most fun was watching you climb all the courses like a little cat! You’re a natural! And I loved our guide!! Especially after he named me “cool mom”! Haha What can I say, flattery will get you everywhere!! Love you honey!

  • I’m sure the view from the cave made this day’s adventure worth while. Well done you for getting off the beach and up onto the rocks. Looks like a lot of fun ~ Jay @rovingjay

  • Fantastic! I’ve never really thought about rock climbing- kind of in the too hard basket, but definitely looks worth the challenge!

  • Oh I do like climbing (*when supervised so I don’t accidentally kill myself for when I’m inevitably distracted by something or other)! 🙂 Krabi isn’t really a priority destination for me, but it’s very popular so if I tag along someone else’s trip I will know what to do with myself! Thanks!

  • Really cool that you convinced your mom to rock climb… I’d never be able to do that with mine! 😛 I really liked how you gave a little overview between the half day and full day tour. I’ve been to heaps of places around Thailand – just not Krabi. Bit disappointed with myself now. I’ll be sure to give this a go though. I’m quite impressed how you didn’t drop your phone, I would have knowing me!

ps. your disclaimer at the end… absolute gold!

    • She’s pretty adventurous herself so it actually wasn’t too difficult! If you make your way back to Thailand, I definitely suggest going to Krabi. Haha glad you liked the disclaimer 😉

  • That sounds like a great experience! I am also a beginner, so I’m sure I’d pick the half day to start with too. But it’s nice to know the full day isn’t too strenuous. Your photos make the rock climbing look very tempting.

  • Wow this is awesome! I was actually just there in December and kept jealously observing all the fearless rock climbers. I stayed at Ton Sai beach, the one right between Railay and Ao Nang – you can see it from the cave. I was so tempted to rent some climbing gear and try it out at least for a day, but I would have probably hurt myself. Thanks so much for sharing! You guys are awesome for being able to do this! Keep it up 🙂

    • Oh my gosh I love Tonsai!! One of my absolute favorite beaches. I would definitely hurt myself if I tried to do this alone, which is why I went the route of a tour guide! Hopefully you can give it a try next time!

  • I’m not able to do any extreme hiking because I have a bum knee but those views from the top make me want to schedule the surgery I’ve been putting off LOL. What a fun, “out of the ordinary” activity to partake in! Totally not what I’d expect from a trip to Thailand!

  • This looks amazing! I love the views from this area – we went last year to Phuket and the Phi Phi Islands but I never even thought about rock climbing! Such cool views from above!

    • Haha I think I get my adventurous side from her. I was a little worried about falling at first too, but once you get the hang of it you stop worrying and just start climbing 🙂

  • You’re so lucky to be living very near Krabi and can go hiking and climbing whenever you want. Those views are really wonderful, and oh yeah, another stroke of luck I think that your phone didn’t fall. The photos were taken from a very considerable height, I’m guessing. Your mom looks very fit, too!

  • What type of shoes would you recommend for rock-climbing and for long rocky walks? I’d love to experience it but I need to know the gears 🙂

    • The shoes the company gave me for the day essentially conform to your feet so they are easy to move around in and not too stiff. They also suggest wearing a half size smaller than your normal size in order to have a tight shoe to climb with! I’m not sure these are what you would want for long rocky walks, but they are great for climbing!

  • That’s really amazing! If I did this, I’m sure my experience of Thailand would be way better than it was 🙂 I did some climbing in Poland, Slovenia and South Africa. It was so scary but at the same time amazing and the views of turquoise lakes – impossible to describe using words. I wish I could see the views that you saw there!

  • Rock climbing is something I do but apprehend… I am totally afraid of heights! Then again I see your pics, and I tell myself, well this is the perfect place to face my fears! 🙂

  • I was always amazed by people who can climb. My fingers have always been too weak to climb. How long have you been doing it?

  • Rock climbing in Krabi looks so much fun! I haven’t been rock climbing before either and am also very clumsy but I’d definitely give it a go. It didn’t visit Krabi on my trip to Thailand… Oh well, I guess I’ll have to go back!
