I’m Tarah (obviously, hence “travelwithtarah”) and I’m from Southern California!
I was fortunate enough to grow up in a home with parents who wanted me to see the world and helped me do so. Before high school, I had already visited the Caribbean, the Panama Canal, Europe, and many more! Looking back though, I don’t think my love for travel came until much later. After high school, I chose to move from Southern California to Alabama to cheer for the best football team in the nation (if you live under a rock, I attended the University of Alabama, roll tide ya’ll). It was that move that really threw me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to experience a culture entirely different than the one I grew up in (if you are from the States, you probably know that California and Alabama couldn’t be more different). While the transition was hard, it also led to the best four years of my life.
Chasing the feeling I got from experiencing a new culture my first few months in Alabama, I chose to study abroad in Barcelona, Spain my junior year of college. If my need for travel wasn’t already insatiable, it certainly was after this trip. While there, I visited 12 countries, 30 cities, gained 15 pounds, and got lost more times than I can count. After that, I knew when I graduated college a year later I wouldn’t be accepting a typical office job.
I developed a need to see the world and I guess that’s what I’m trying to do now. Nearly a year ago, I moved to Thailand to teach English. I spent five months teaching English to kindergartners and two backpacking through Southeast Asia. Still not quite ready to settle down, I moved to a tiny town in the South of France to work in a hotel. As work is just wrapping up, I couldn’t leave Europe without doing at least a little bit of exploring. So for the next month I’ll be suitcasing (no backpack this time) through a few countries in Europe! I’m hoping to check off as many items on my bucket list as possible and document it along the way. So, follow my travels as I see as many countries, drink as many coffees, and chug as many cocktails as possible!
What You’ll Find on This Blog:
Travelwithtarah began with the intention of being primarily a travel blog, but I quickly realized I have too many random thoughts and opinions that I apparently feel the need to share. So while there will be plenty of travel tips and destination guides, you can also plan on seeing everything from my thoughts on life at the moment to teaching advice to travel inspiration to just about anything that pops in my head.
I would love to sit here and tell you that I’ll be giving you the best budget traveling advice, but that would be a lie. I enjoy the finer things from time to time, but I also know when to pinch pennies and stay in the cheapest hostel I can find. Basically, I’m a luxury traveler on a backpacker’s budget. So while most of the time I’ll be staying in the top bunk of an 18-person dorm room, I’ll occasionally be staying on the top floor of the nicest hotel I can find.
I hope this site can help you plan your next vacation, but I also hope it can inspire you to take that leap of faith you’ve been hesitant to take. I hope it can help you choose where to go when you visit x, y, or z, but mostly, I hope it makes you laugh. I hope you find the answers you’re looking for in regards to travel, but I also hope it reminds you to live life to the fullest.
